Verified & Fact-Checked

Every Nepali student going abroad for studies needs IELTS – and most of them need coaching to hit their target band score. Kathmandu has dozens of IELTS preparation institutes ranging from large established consultancies to small neighbourhood coaching centres. The quality varies enormously.

This guide lists the well-known institutes, tells you what each one is known for, gives you the actual fee ranges, and – more importantly – tells you what questions to ask before enrolling anywhere.

IELTS Exam Fee in Nepal (2026)

Before thinking about preparation classes, know the exam cost:

  • IELTS on Paper (Academic and General Training): NPR 36,200
  • IELTS on Computer: NPR 33,000

Both are administered by British Council Nepal and IDP Nepal – the only authorised test providers. Register directly at their official websites. Do not pay exam fees through third parties.

Preparation class fees are separate from the exam fee and typically range from NPR 5,000 to NPR 15,000 depending on the institute, duration, and batch size.

What to Actually Ask Before Enrolling

Most IELTS institutes in Kathmandu make similar claims – “experienced trainers”, “high success rate”, “best materials”. Here are the questions that cut through the marketing:

  • What is the batch size? Speaking practice is nearly useless in a class of 30+ students. If the speaking module is your weak area, ask specifically how much speaking practice time each student gets per class.
  • How many full mock tests are included? A minimum of 3–4 full timed mock tests (all four sections) is necessary for meaningful exam simulation. Ask whether writing tasks are individually evaluated or just self-marked.
  • Are the trainers IELTS-certified? British Council and IDP run trainer certification programmes. An institute with certified trainers is meaningfully different from one where any English teacher runs the class.
  • What happens if you don’t reach your target score? Some institutes offer a free repeat course. Others don’t. Know this before you pay.
  • What materials do you use? Cambridge Official IELTS Practice Tests (Books 1–18) are the gold standard. If an institute uses only photocopied or internally made materials, that’s a red flag.
  • Check Google and Facebook reviews from the last 6 months – not the institute’s own testimonials. Look for specific mentions of band scores achieved, not vague praise.

Can You Prepare for IELTS Without a Class?

Yes – and many students who self-study score better than those who attend classes. The honest answer: a coaching class is most useful for Writing Task 2 feedback and Speaking practice – the two sections where having an evaluator matters. For Listening and Reading, self-study with official Cambridge practice books is highly effective and significantly cheaper.
