Overview

Update (2026): The Tongarewa International Scholarship has been discontinued from 2026 onwards. It has been replaced by two new automatic scholarships โ€” the VUW Undergraduate International Scholarship (NZD 15,000) and the VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship (NZD 10,000). Details are provided below. The Tongarewa International Scholarship was one of Victoria University of Wellington's (Te Herenga Waka) most recognised awards for international students. It provided partial tuition fee support of up to NZD 10,000 to incoming international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, along with guaranteed accommodation in one of VUW's Halls of Residence for the first year. In August 2025, VUW discontinued the Tongarewa Scholarship and introduced two replacement scholarships with higher values and a simpler process โ€” no separate application required.

VUW Undergraduate International Scholarship

Worth NZD 15,000 for one year, this scholarship is available to all new international students entering the first year of a Bachelor's degree at VUW, studying full-time on campus. It is credited automatically toward tuition fees upon full enrolment.

VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship

Worth NZD 10,000 for one year, this scholarship is available to all new international students entering a Master's degree or Postgraduate Diploma at VUW, studying full-time on campus. Like the undergraduate award, it requires no separate application and is credited automatically toward tuition fees. Both scholarships are open to Nepali students and all other international students from any country.

VUW Postgraduate International Scholarship

How to Apply

Unlike the old Tongarewa Scholarship which required a separate application and a 500-word personal statement, the new VUW International Scholarships require no separate application. Eligibility is assessed automatically during the admissions process.
  1. Apply for admission to your chosen Bachelor's, Master's, or Postgraduate Diploma programme through the VUW online application portal.
  2. Submit all required documents โ€” academic transcripts, English language proficiency results (IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE), and any programme-specific requirements.
  3. Receive your Offer of Place โ€” if you are eligible for the scholarship, it will be stated directly in your Offer of Place letter. No follow-up or separate form is needed.
  4. Accept your offer and enrol โ€” the scholarship amount is automatically credited toward your tuition fees once you are fully enrolled at VUW.
Apply early. Earlier applications receive faster offers, and trimester intakes fill progressively. Key deadlines for 2026 are 1 May (Trimester 2) and 1 September (Trimester 3). For queries, contact VUW's Scholarships and Admissions Office at scholarships@vuw.ac.nz.
