Overview
The Schwarzman Scholars Program is a fully funded one-year Master of Arts in Global Affairs at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University in Beijing โ one of China's most prestigious universities. Founded in 2016 through a landmark philanthropic gift by Stephen A. Schwarzman, it is explicitly modelled on the Rhodes Scholarship and designed to build the next generation of global leaders who understand China's role in the 21st century.
The program is taught entirely in English and accepts up to 200 scholars per year from the United States, China, and the rest of the world. It is among the most competitive postgraduate awards in the world, with an acceptance rate of approximately 3%. For Nepali applicants, it represents a rare opportunity to access a world-class, fully funded master's programme focused on geopolitics, leadership, and China โ at no cost, with a direct path into a powerful global alumni network.
- Fully funded: tuition, housing, flights, stipend, health insurance, China travel, and laptop
- Taught in English โ no Chinese language requirement to apply or study
- Open to all nationalities including Nepal, with no country quota for global applicants
- Any undergraduate field of study is eligible โ not restricted to politics, business, or international relations
- One-year programme with intensive leadership curriculum, guest speakers from global business and government, and embedded travel across China
- Strong alumni network across public service, business, and NGO sectors globally
โ ๏ธ Highly competitive: With approximately 3% of global applicants selected, academic excellence alone is not sufficient. The selection committee prioritises demonstrated leadership, clarity of purpose, and intercultural empathy. Nepali applicants with experience in public service, entrepreneurship, policy, or social change โ and who can articulate a compelling case for why China matters to their ambitions โ are the strongest candidates.
Which Application Track Applies to Nepali Students?
Nepali citizens apply through the US/Global track, not the China track. The two tracks have entirely different timelines, review processes, and interview locations. For the Class of 2027-2028, the US/Global application is open from April 8, 2026 to September 9, 2026 at 3 p.m. EDT. Interviews for global (non-US) applicants take place in London in late October 2026.
Note: Applicants whose parents were Chinese citizens at the time of their birth face additional eligibility conditions under PRC regulations, regardless of the applicant's own citizenship. If this applies to you, review the full application instructions carefully before applying.
Eligibility
Who is Eligible
- Undergraduate degree: Must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited university in any field of study. Final-year undergraduates may apply if they will complete all degree requirements before August 1 of their enrollment year. For the Class of 2027-2028, the deadline is August 1, 2027.
- Age: Must be at least 18 and not yet 29 years of age as of August 1 of the enrollment year. For the 2027-2028 cohort: born after August 1, 1998. This is a hard cutoff with no exceptions.
- English proficiency: All teaching is in English. Non-native English speakers must submit official test scores. Accepted tests and minimum scores: TOEFL 100 (or 5 on the 6-point scale), IELTS 7.0, Cambridge C1/C2 score of 185, or Duolingo English Test score of 130. The requirement is waived for applicants who studied for at least two years at an undergraduate or postgraduate institution where English was the primary language of instruction.
- Citizenship: Open to all nationalities. Nepali citizens apply through the US/Global track. No country quota applies to the global pool.
- Leadership and character: Demonstrated leadership ability, academic aptitude, entrepreneurial spirit, empathy, open-mindedness, and exemplary integrity are assessed holistically. There is no minimum GPA specified โ character and leadership record matter as much as grades.
Who is Not Eligible
- Applicants aged 29 or older as of August 1 of the enrollment year โ the age cap is a hard cutoff with no exceptions.
- Applicants who will not have completed their undergraduate degree by August 1 of the enrollment year.
- Applicants without the required English proficiency scores (unless the waiver condition applies).
- Applicants holding Chinese passports (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan) who apply through the US/Global track โ they must use the China application system, which has a separate timeline and earlier deadline.
- Applicants born to Chinese citizen parents who do not meet the additional PRC regulatory eligibility conditions โ review the full application instructions if this may apply to you.
How to Apply
- Confirm you are on the US/Global track. Nepali citizens apply through the US/Global system at connect.schwarzmanscholars.org/apply. Do not confuse this with the China application system, which is only for holders of Chinese passports.
- Check eligibility precisely. Verify your age (must be under 29 on August 1, 2027 for the current cycle), your degree completion status, and your English proficiency score requirements. Use Schwarzman's online eligibility checker at the application instructions page.
- Register with your campus fellowship advisor (if applicable). Some universities have internal pre-application processes and earlier internal deadlines for Schwarzman. If you are a current student or recent graduate of a university with a fellowship advising office, notify them early โ they may offer interview preparation and strategic advice.
- Write your two required essays. These are the core of your application:
- Leadership Essay (750 words): Demonstrate specific, concrete leadership โ not titles. Show what you did, what was at stake, what you decided, and what changed as a result.
- Statement of Purpose (500 words): Explain why Schwarzman Scholars, why China, why now, and how a year in Beijing connects to your career trajectory and leadership ambitions.
- Prepare your CV/rรฉsumรฉ (max 2 pages), official transcripts, and 1-minute video introduction. The video is not a formal presentation โ it is a chance to show personality and communication style. Introduce yourself naturally.
- Secure three letters of recommendation. Recommenders should know you well and speak to intellectual ability, personal character, and leadership potential using specific examples from direct experience with you. Avoid generic academic references โ choose people who can be concrete and specific.
- Submit the online application before September 9, 2026 at 3 p.m. EDT. Late submissions are not accepted under any circumstances. Submit at least a week early to avoid portal congestion near the deadline.
- Attend an information session. Schwarzman runs regular online info sessions with admissions staff and alumni throughout the application period. These are free and provide genuine insight into what the committee looks for. The upcoming sessions page lists dates.
- If shortlisted: prepare for interview in London (late October 2026). Global (non-US) applicants interview in London in a multi-day format including social events and panel interviews. Travel costs to London are typically the applicant's own responsibility. Prepare for current affairs questions and leadership scenario discussions.
- Receive results and accept or decline. Final decisions are communicated in late 2026. Offers cannot be deferred โ you either accept for the 2027-2028 cohort or decline.
