Overview

The Rhodes Scholarship is the world's oldest and most prestigious international postgraduate award, established in 1902 through the will of Cecil Rhodes. It enables exceptional young people from across the globe to pursue fully funded postgraduate study at the University of Oxford, one of the world's top-ranked universities.

The scholarship is not purely academic. Rhodes looks for candidates who combine intellectual excellence with demonstrated leadership, a commitment to public service, and the character to make a meaningful difference in the world. It is a merit-based, fully funded, full-time postgraduate award.

  • Covers all Oxford course fees, annual stipend, visa costs, and return flights
  • Open to postgraduate study in almost any full-time Oxford programme
  • Scholars join a global alumni network of over 8,000 leaders in public life, academia, and civil society
  • Duration varies from 2 years (taught master's) to 3 years (DPhil/PhD)
  • No bond or work-back obligation

Status for Nepali Applicants (2026–2027 Cycle)

⚠️ Important Notice: Nepali students are not part of any named Rhodes constituency (such as India, USA, or Southern Africa). They have historically been eligible to apply through the Rhodes Global Constituency, which is open to students from countries without a dedicated constituency. However, the Rhodes Trust has suspended the Global Constituency for the 2026–2027 application cycle. This means Nepali students cannot apply in 2026 for entry in October 2027.

The suspension is cycle-specific and is expected to be reviewed. Students are encouraged to check the official Rhodes website for updates on when the Global Constituency reopens, and to explore alternative fully funded UK scholarships in the meantime.

Currently Active Alternatives for Nepali Students

  • Chevening Scholarships β€” UK government's flagship scholarship; fully funded; Nepal has an active constituency. Applications typically open in August.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships β€” For Commonwealth citizens including Nepal; covers tuition, stipend, and flights for Master's and PhD programmes.
  • GREAT Scholarships β€” British Council and UK universities; partial to full funding; multiple UK institutions participate.

Eligibility

Who is Eligible

  • Citizenship: Must meet the citizenship and residency requirements of the Rhodes constituency through which you apply. Nepali citizens apply through the Global Constituency when open.
  • Age: Must be aged 18–24 on 1 October of the application year. An extended upper limit of 27 applies to candidates who completed their undergraduate degree later than usual (e.g., after completing a medical, dental, or law internship).
  • Academic qualification: Must hold or be completing an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK First Class Honours β€” typically a GPA of 3.7/4.0 or higher, or Distinction in professional programmes like Medicine or Pharmacy.
  • Programme intent: Must intend to pursue a full-time postgraduate programme at the University of Oxford. You must apply to Oxford separately after receiving the scholarship.
  • Character and leadership: Strong record of extracurricular contribution, community service, or leadership beyond academics is essential β€” not optional.

Who is Not Eligible

  • Students who are eligible to apply through a named Rhodes constituency (e.g., India, USA) but choose to apply through the Global Constituency β€” you must apply through your home constituency.
  • Applicants older than 24 (or 27 under extended criteria) on 1 October of the application year.
  • Students who have not yet completed (or will not complete by June/July of the application year) an undergraduate degree.
  • Applicants seeking part-time or distance programmes β€” the scholarship covers full-time Oxford programmes only.
  • Nepali students applying in the 2026 cycle β€” the Global Constituency is suspended for this cycle.

How to Apply

  1. Check your constituency and eligibility. Use the Rhodes eligibility checker on the official website to confirm which constituency you fall under. Nepali students apply through the Global Constituency when open.
  2. Choose your Oxford programme. Research full-time postgraduate programmes at Oxford relevant to your academic background and career vision. Check admission requirements carefully β€” the scholarship does not guarantee Oxford admission; you apply to the university separately.
  3. Prepare your personal statement. Articulate your academic trajectory, leadership story, commitment to public service, and post-Oxford goals. This is the most important part of your application.
  4. Secure four reference letters. Typically two academic and two character references. References must be submitted independently through the online portal before the reference deadline.
  5. Gather supporting documents. Transcripts, degree certificates, passport, CV, and any supporting evidence of leadership or service.
  6. Submit online before the constituency deadline. Applications are submitted through the Rhodes online portal. The Global Constituency deadline is typically in July; named constituencies vary. There is no application fee.
  7. Shortlisting and interview. Shortlisted candidates are invited for an interview, typically held in October–November. The interview panel assesses intellect, character, and leadership potential.
  8. Apply to Oxford University. If selected, you will receive guidance from the Rhodes Trust on applying to your chosen Oxford programme. The Oxford application fee is covered by the scholarship.
