Overview
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Undergraduate Students is offered by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho) to international students wishing to study at Japanese national universities as undergraduate students. It is a fully funded scholarship covering tuition, a monthly living stipend, and round-trip airfare. Nepali students are eligible to apply through the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu, which is the sole application channel for Nepal. The scholarship includes a Japanese language preparatory course before university placement, as all classes are conducted in Japanese. This is one of the most prestigious and sought-after government scholarship programs available to Nepali students for undergraduate study abroad.Eligibility
- Must be a national of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan โ Nepal qualifies
- Born on or after April 2, 2002 (for the 2027 intake)
- Must have completed 12 years of schooling outside Japan (i.e., completed +2 or equivalent)
- Must not have previously studied in Japan on a MEXT scholarship
- Must be willing to learn Japanese โ all university courses are conducted in Japanese
- Academic marks requirement: 70% or above (CGPA 3.1) for Natural Sciences; 60% or above (CGPA 2.5) for Humanities and Social Sciences
- Must choose a field of study either from (1) Social Sciences and Humanities or (2) Natural Sciences
- Candidates should apply for the same discipline they studied or a closely related field
How to Apply
- Download the Application Guidelines from the Embassy of Japan in Nepal website (np.emb-japan.go.jp)
- Prepare required documents: completed application form, academic transcripts and certificates (SEE, +2, and Bachelor if applicable) attested by a Notary Public, attested copy of Nepali citizenship certificate, and recommendation letters
- Submit all digitally completed or scanned documents to education@km.mofa.go.jp by the deadline โ applications after the deadline are not accepted and no receipt email is sent
- Qualified applicants are notified of their written examination number by June 22nd
- Sit the written examination at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu (subjects include English and subject-area papers)
- Shortlisted candidates proceed to an interview at the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu
- Successful applicants' documents are forwarded to Japanese universities for placement; acceptance letters and visa processing follow
- Pre-departure orientation is held before travel to Japan
