Private & Boarding Schools’ Organization Nepal (PABSON)

Kathmandu · Non-profit Umbrella Organization

Overview

PABSON stands for Private and Boarding Schools' Organization, Nepal. It is the largest, most recognized umbrella organization representing private and boarding schools across Nepal. PABSON is a non-political, non-profit organization, established in 1991 AD (2047 BS) and formally registered with the Government of Nepal at the Central District Office (CDO), Kathmandu (Registration No. 203, dated 2047.9.24).

With over 5,000 member schools nationwide, PABSON operates through a network of central, provincial, district, and local committees elected under its own constitution. It serves as the collective voice of private school founders, principals, teachers, staff, and students — advocating for the rights and development of the private school sector in Nepal.

PABSON's motto captures its core philosophy: "Let All the Private and Boarding Schools Be United."

Why Was PABSON Established?

As private schools began multiplying across Nepal from the late 1970s onwards (after 2028 BS), a need emerged for a unified body to guide, protect, and professionally develop the private school sector. PABSON was created to:

  • Guide and promote private schools and protect the rights of school founders and investors
  • Harmonize and professionally develop the education system across private institutions
  • Safeguard the professional rights of principals, teachers, staff, and students
  • Coordinate with government agencies and non-government organizations on school education policy
  • Help private schools become centers of excellence with strong infrastructure and trained human resources

Organizational Structure

PABSON functions through its own constitution via central, provincial, district/local committees, sub-committees, and departments — all elected or nominated as per constitutional provisions. It acts as a nodal agency between private schools and government bodies, NGOs, and other education stakeholders.

Membership

PABSON membership is open to all privately managed schools from playgroup to higher secondary level that are registered with the District Education Office (DEO) or local government body. Three types of membership are issued. Schools must comply with PABSON's constitution, code of conduct, and guidelines. Applications are submitted to the respective PABSON District Executive Office.

PABSON vs. N-PABSON / NPABSAN

PABSON is often confused with N-PABSON (National Private and Boarding Schools' Organisation Nepal), also known as NPABSAN. These are two separate organizations, both representing the private school sector but operating independently. PABSON is the older and larger of the two.

Scholarships

PABSON itself does not offer scholarships directly to students. However, it recognizes and awards academically outstanding students from its member schools. Notably, students who top district-level SEE (Secondary Education Examination) results from PABSON-affiliated schools have been recognized and awarded at PABSON's national and district events.

Scholarship opportunities for students are offered individually by PABSON member schools. Parents and students should contact their specific school for information on available scholarships and fee concessions.
